Join us for an informative webinar hosted by the South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) and 211 to dive into the important role the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline plays in supporting mental health across the state. As the 988 hotline continues to gain momentum nationally, South Dakota is making significant strides in integrating this vital resource into its behavioral health services to better serve individuals in crisis.

During this session, participants will:

  • Gain an overview of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and its mission to provide immediate, confidential assistance for mental health emergencies.
  • Learn about South Dakota’s implementation of the 988 program, including collaboration with local crisis centers, mobile response teams, and emergency services.
  • Understand the state’s ongoing efforts to expand resources and support for individuals facing behavioral health crises, ensuring timely intervention and access to care.
  • Explore the training and support provided to first responders, mental health professionals, and community organizations in working with 988 calls.
  • Discuss how the 988 program has already begun to make a difference in the lives of South Dakotans, with real-world examples of its impact.

Presenter: Janet Kittams, Chief Executive Officer of the Helpline Center

Janet Kittams is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Helpline Center. She has been with agency for over 25 years in a variety of leadership roles. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of South Dakota and her Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of North Dakota and is a licensed professional counselor. Her experience has includes serving as a leader in statewide efforts surrounding suicide prevention, expanding the 211 system to become statewide, and building the Helpline Center to work as a collaborative partner on a variety social service and health care issues.

Presenter: Jordan Mounga, Program Manager for Suicide Prevention and Crisis Services, Department of Social Services Division of Behavioral Health

Jordan Mounga is currently the Program Manager for Suicide Prevention and Crisis Services at Department of Social Services Division of Behavioral Health. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Northern State University and has worked in grant management, prevention and community coalition work in South Dakota for over 15 years. In her current role, Jordan is responsible for the programmatic management of suicide prevention and implementation of the three pillars of crisis care.
