Creative Self-Care for Caregivers in Aging Services

Description: Explore how creative practice can support caregiver wellbeing. This session offers simple tools to reduce stress, prevent burnout, and strengthen team connection through creative expression.
Objectives:
- Recognize stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue
- Learn simple creative practices for reflection and renewal
- Explore ways to support staff wellbeing through the arts
- Participate in a hands-on Care Crate activity, Barn Quilt Designs.
Target audience: Caregivers and staff in long-term care, assisted living and hospice
Ariadne Albright, Director, Creative Care, LLC
Ariadne (air ee odd knee) Albright, MFA is the Creative Aging SD Coordinator for the South Dakota Arts Council, and a visual artist and arts-in-health consultant working across healthcare, academic, community, and correctional settings. Through Creative Care, LLC, she designs arts-based programs that center on personal expression, resilience, and artist-led collaboration, with a current emphasis on working alongside incarcerated individuals. From 2013–2025, she coordinated arts programming at Sanford Health–Vermillion, and from 2016–2026 developed and taught arts-in-health curriculum at the University of South Dakota. She was awarded the CDC Arts & Vaccine Confidence Grant (2023) and received the Teaching Artist Guild Service Award (2024). She contributed to the National Organization for Arts in Health (NOAH) Core Curriculum, Code of Ethics, and Standards as a founding board member (2016– 2022). Her books, Creative Care: An Artist in Healthcare and Creative Care: Projects, support creatives entering the arts-in-health field.

- Glue stick (or white glue, the best? Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue)
- scissors (not included in Care Crate)
- scraps of scrapbook or decorative paper
- magnets (upcycled Sanford Health provided in Care Crate)
- ruler, pencil & 1 sheet 8.5 x 11 construction paper (optional)
