Overview: IDDSI is the current standard of practice for dysphagia management, which is becoming a regulatory requirement during survey visits. During this session, we'll delve into the intricacies of its implementation, available training and resources, equipping you with the knowledge needed to effectively support your team. Discover valuable insights from sharing lessons learned and offer practical tips to conquer the common challenges faced in the dynamic world of dysphagia care.

Objectives:

  • Describe the IDDSI Framework, the current standard for dysphagia management.
  • Discuss implementation process in skilled nursing facility (SNF) and Assisted Living (AL) settings and available training and resources.
  • Explain how members of the AL/SNF interdisciplinary teams can most effectively assist in the implementation process.
  • Discuss lessons learned and tips on how to handle the most frequent challenges that arise.

Presenter: Dr. Shellie M. Sonnentag, DNP, AGPCNP, CD, NHA, RAC-CTA, DNS-CT, WCC, QCP 

Shellie Sonnentag is the chief nursing officer for Real Property Health Facilities. She directs the executive level QAPI program and company policy development, and supports clinical and nutritional service operations for all of the RPHF nursing homes and residential care facilities. In her 30+ year long-term care career, Dr. Sonnentag has contributed to the field of long-term care nursing by serving as a co-chair of the Quality, Education and Convention Committees for the Wisconsin Health Care Association and the Wisconsin Center for Assisted Living. She serves on the advisory board for the CHSRA Clinical Resource Center and is a current member of the Wisconsin DON Council and the American Association of Post-Acute Care Nursing. Shellie is an IDDSI champion, achieving full implementation of IDDSI throughout her company in 2019.
