This session offers a comprehensive overview of CMS and state survey processes, including inspections, enforcement, and the role of the Hospice Public Health Advisor in providing guidance and support to agencies. Participants will review key hospice regulations, including Conditions of Participation (CoPs) and SOM Appendix M updates, and explore common deficiencies and best practices. The session will cover critical areas such as patient rights, care planning, medication management, infection control, symptom management, and team collaboration, providing practical strategies to promote compliance, quality improvement, and patient-centered care in long-term care settings.

    Carrie Christopherson is a Registered Nurse with over 15 years of experience in hospice and palliative care. She currently serves as the Hospice Public Health Advisor and Western Regional Manager at the South Dakota Department of Health, where she provides guidance, education, and oversight for CMS-certified hospice agencies across the region.

    Carrie’s extensive hospice background includes roles as a hospice visiting nurse and case manager, agency and patient care coordinator, and hospice travel nurse, giving her a comprehensive perspective on patient care, agency operations, and regulatory compliance. She is also CDC Certified as an Infection Preventionist, bringing specialized expertise in infection control and patient safety to her work in hospice settings.

    Carrie is passionate about supporting hospice teams in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care and helping agencies navigate the evolving landscape of CMS regulations and best practices.
