Overview:

This program is designed for healthcare professionals to gain an understanding of the donation process. The materials presented form a framework in which the healthcare professional will increase their comfort level in supporting families through the donation process at the end of their loved one’s life. The purposes for offering the option of donation will be discussed, including how donation benefits the donor family, the recipient, the healthcare professional and the general public.

At the end of this session, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the healthcare professional’s role in the donation process
  2. Identify what organs and tissues can be donated and their uses in transplantation.
  3. Summarize the referral process for potential organ, tissue and eye donors.
  4. Explain required documentation and how to complete it.

Presenter: Barb Nelson-Agnew, Hospital Partner Liaison, LifeSource

I have worked for LifeSource for over 21 years as a hospital partner liaison and supervisor. I worked for American Red Cross Tissue Services for 5 years as a Tissue Services Liaison. I work with over 100+ hospitals in MN, ND and SD, providing training on the referral process to 1-800-24-SHARE, legislative updates, education about the benefits of donation, frequent reporting and statistics, community awareness, and assist hospitals with policy changes and implementation.  I provide real-time onsite response when possible on organ referrals/cases and immediate donor case follow-up that may involve after action reviews.  I have relationships with many local donor families and serve as a link between LifeSource ambassadors and their local communities, arranging events and speaking engagements with service organizations and hospitals to increase awareness about the need for donation.
