Overview: This educational session focuses on pain management strategies for refractory pain when standard of care medications, such as opioids, acetaminophen, and NSAIDs, and nonpharmacologic modalities, fail to provide adequate pain relief in cancer related pain. The information provided will educate the audience on interventional procedural options that have been shown to improve pain in the cancer population.
Objectives:
- Review the impact of refractory pain on patients with advanced stage cancers
- Learn different interventional strategies that are shown to be beneficial for refractory cancer related pain when stand of care measures fail to control pain.
- Identify patients that may benefit from interventional options for oncologic pain management as part of the pain management regimen.

Nicole Eye is a pain clinical pharmacy specialist in acute pain management/Interventional pain services at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Her professional interests include acute pain management, cancer pain management, intrathecal pump management, and student and resident education. Nikki has helped develop and serve as the lead pharmacist for the inpatient acute pain service for the past 14 years at Avera McKennan. She also assisted with creating an intrathecal cancer pain pump program to improve refractory cancer-related pain for the oncology population in 2019. Nikki has served on many councils to educate other medical professionals on pain management across the country.
