During this session we'll:

  • Identify resources and opportunities offered by the South Dakota Parkinson’s Foundation to support individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their families and connect them with local community groups.
  • Highlight the role of physical therapy and community resources in managing fall risk.
  • Educate on the importance of fall prevention.
  • Identify common risk factors associated with falls.
  • Provide practical tips and strategies to reduce fall risk and improve functional mobility.
  • Discuss sample balance screenings performed in Sioux Falls, including effective screening tests and safety checklists.
  • Encourage regular exercise, emphasizing that exercise is medicine and intensity matters.
  • Recommend establishing baseline status using standardized outcome measures (PDEDGE) and conduct regular follow-ups with physical therapy.

Presenter: Stephanie Myers, PT, DPT, GCS, NCS, MSCS, Avera Health

Stephanie Myers has dedicated 19 years to her role as a physical therapist at Avera in Sioux Falls, SD. She is a PWR! (Parkinson Wellness Recovery) trained clinician and LSVT BIG certified, bringing specialized knowledge to her work with individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. Stephanie has served on the South Dakota Parkinson Foundation’s board since 2016 and currently holds the position of Vice President. She is a Board-Certified Specialist in Neurological and Geriatric Physical Therapy and a member of the Neurological and Geriatric Sections of the American Physical Therapy Association.
