Overview: Nurses have a powerful voice in shaping health care policy and improving outcomes for the patients and communities they serve. This session will introduce participants to the role of nurses as policy advocates, highlight the impact and results of advocacy efforts, and demonstrate why active participation in the policymaking process is essential. Participants will leave with a greater understanding of advocacy and the importance of using their voice to influence positive change in health care.

Deb Fischer Clemens brings 50 years of nursing experience and a distinguished career in health care leadership and advocacy. She served as a nurse manager at St. Joseph Hospital, now Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, for 25 years. She later helped establish the Avera Center for Public Policy and spent 24 years advocating for Avera and the health care community through state and federal policy.
Throughout her career, Deb has been a strong advocate for quality, cost-effective health care for patients and families, as well as for the employees who provide care in health care facilities. She currently serves as President of the South Dakota Nurses Association, continuing her commitment to advancing the nursing profession and strengthening health care through advocacy.
