Join SDAHO for an essential Workplace Safety (WPS) Workshop, designed to enhance safety and security practices in healthcare settings. This interactive session will cover key topics such as conducting thorough facility risk assessments and mastering effective de-escalation techniques, with the goal of creating a safer and more secure environment for both staff and patients.
The workshop will showcase a comprehensive, real-world risk assessment from a South Dakota healthcare facility. This in-depth evaluation will explore areas such as:
- Documentation and policy review;
- Community data analysis;
- Identification of high-risk and sensitive areas;
- Physical environment;
- Technology and equipment;
- and strategies for addressing workplace violence scenarios.
The session will also highlight how these assessments contribute to achieving the broader security program’s objectives, while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and accreditation standards.
This valuable training opportunity is made possible through funding from the South Dakota Office of Rural Health and the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Program.

Attendance Limitation: Please note that only two individuals from each Critical Access Hospital are permitted to attend the conference per grant funding.
Presenters:
Michael Dunning, Owner/Principal Consultant, The Healthcare Security Consulting Group
Mr. Dunning has spent the past 40 years building security programs.
The past 20 have been dedicated to security in hospitals, designing programs to protect staff, patients, and all who enter our environments of care.
The passion of protecting others and building safe environments has culminated into a life of serving. That path has led to the formation of The Healthcare Security Consulting Group.
Lisa Terry, Senior Consultant - Security, Vizient
Lisa Terry, CHPA, CPP has significant experience leading healthcare security, police, safety and emergency management programs.
Lisa has served as the Chief of Campus Police and Public Safety with WakeMed Health and Hospitals in Raleigh, North Carolina, Chief of Police and Public Safety with Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia and Director of Hospital Police and Transportation at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
She shares her knowledge, strategies, and lessons learned for successfully preventing and mitigating violence in her books: “Preventing Violence in the Emergency Department” and “The Active Shooter Response Toolkit for Healthcare Workers.”
